DURHAM: Kathleen (Pat) Patterson Cowan, 91, passed away Friday, March 5, after an extended period of declining health. She was born June 12, 1918 in Stony Point, NC to Marvin L. and Janie Mae Alexander Patterson. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Alma Kirkman; two brothers, Lynford L. Patterson and Ronald A. Patterson; and her beloved husband, Thomas G. Cowan. She and Tom were married May 21, 1941 and enjoyed over fifty-two years together before his death in 1994.
Tom’s career with Bellsouth resulted in the Cowans making their home in many places over the years. Before moving to Charlotte in 1968, where Tom retired, they lived in Decatur, GA; Reidsville, Greensboro, Shelby, Gastonia, Winston-Salem, and Raleigh. After experiencing health problems in 2003, Pat left her Charlotte home to live at Croasdaile Village to be near her daughter, Janet Stolp. Pat will be remembered by the care and love she so generously gave to her family and friends.
She will be missed by her three daughters: Ann Miller (Charles) of Winston-Salem, Julia Rawlinson of Charlotte, and Janet Stolp (Dr. Bret) of Durham; six grandchildren: Todd Miller of San Diego; Sharon Bickel (Don) of Huntersville, NC; David Miller (Laura) of Tega Cay, SC.; Liz Rawlinson Kalooky (Sean) of Mathews, NC; and Ryan and Melanie Stolp of Durham. She also leaves four great grandchildren: Melissa and Margaret Bickel, and Kathleen and Allison Miller.
The family would like to thank the staff of Croasdaile Village, particularly the Pavilion 1 North staff for the compassionate care they gave Pat.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday in Blacknall Memorial Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Allan Poole officiating. A reception will follow at the home of Janet & Bret Stolp, 3010 Montgomery St., Durham.
A graveside service will be held 10:30AM Monday in Sharon Memorial Park, Charlotte, followed by a memorial service at 11:30 in Sardis Presbyterian in Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are with Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
